Men often struggle with mental health but do not know who they can turn to for support. Men who ask for help due to a mental health disorder are often stigmatized making men who are having mental health difficulties hesitant to ask for help. You are not alone, in fact, in the United States alone over 6 million men per year are affected by depression. Studies show that men struggle with mental health concerns as much as their female counterparts and sometimes to a higher degree. More than 4 times as many men as women died by suicide in 2010. Suicide has been on the rise for men since 2000 and was named the 7th leading cause of death for men in 2011. Things need to change. Due to social norms and societal expectations, men are not seeking the help they need. Let’s break the cycle, end the stigma. It is ok to ask for help.
