Did you know that In the U.S., as many as 3 in 100 people have or will have a psychotic episode at some point in their lives? Despite this fact, there is so much that is still unknown about Psychosis.

What is Psychosis

Psychosis is not an illness but rather a symptom of mental health disorders like Schizophrenia, Depression and Bipolar. Psychosis affects the way a person perceives their environment and makes it difficult for them to distinguish between what is real and what is not.

Psychosis Causes

Psychosis is developed by several factors including genetics, physical injury, trauma, substance abuse and/or mental health disorders. Teens and young adults have an increased risk of having a psychotic episode due to hormonal changes in the brain that occur during puberty. Studies show that 24 yrs old is the average age of the first psychotic break.

Psychosis Signs and Symptoms

Signs and symptoms vary per person but can include:

  • Hallucinations – Auditory (hearing things), Visual (seeing things), Tactile (feeling things), Olfactory (smelling things).
  • Delusions – Thinking you have special powers or that you are God.
  • Persistent repetition of words or actions.
  • Talking incoherently
  • False belief of superiority
  • Disorganized thoughts and behaviors
  • Difficulty thinking and understanding

Treatment

Better outcomes have been reported when the symptoms of Psychosis are identified and treated early. Treatment often includes the use of psychotropic medications, skills training to improve daily functioning, and mental health therapy. Hospitalization may become necessary if it is determined that the patient is unable to take care of himself due to his symptoms.
